At Day Violins, we would encourage every child who starts playing a string instrument to continue throughout their school years. Unfortunately, that sometimes doesn’t happen. The lure of a shiny band instrument, chorus, art—or some other interest may lead to a decision not to pursue the string experience. In this case, you are faced with returning your rented instrument. We hope that following Q & A will help make your instrument return simple and painless.

Q: Where do I return my rented instrument?

A: All returns must be made to the Day Violins shop at 14221A Willard Road, Chantilly, VA 20151. Do not try to return your rented instrument to or through the school.

Q: How do I return my instrument?

A: Returns are easy. Simply bring your instrument to the Day Violins shop during its open hours (10-7 on weekdays; 10-5 on Saturday). You will be asked to fill out a form with enough information to make sure we can match the return to the right person in our files. You get a copy of the form as a receipt for the return and you are on your way! It is always helpful—but not necessary—if you bring your copy of the rental contract with you for the return.

Q: Anything else I need to do?

A: You should make sure that all your personal belongings are out of the instrument case. Clean out any papers, music, or lesson books. The shoulder rest and tuner are items that you purchased and belong to you. Anything left in the case will either be discarded, or, if usable by the schools orchestra program, will be donated to the schools. We can’t be responsible for any personal items left in the case.

Q: What about my deposit and the rent I paid in advance?

A: Everyone pays a deposit of $100 when the instrument is rented. Assuming the rent is current and the instrument is in good shape, this deposit will be returned, together with any advanced rents not already used, within 30 days. The return will be made to the credit card you have on file with Day Violins. Please note that it is our experience that it takes 4 or 5 days for the return to show up on your credit card records after it leaves our account. (The credit card companies post charges immediately, but seem to take their own sweet time when it comes to giving you money back!)

Q: When do I return my rented instrument?

A: Rentals are assessed on the first day of each month. There is no proration of rents on returns. If you want to avoid a rental charge for the next month, the instrument must be returned prior to the end of the month. Please note that Day Violins will be closed on Memorial Day. We are also always closed on Sundays.

Q: Do I have to return my instrument at the end of the school year?

A: There is no need to return your rented instrument just because school is over. In fact, you are encouraged to keep the instrument over the summer and to have your child practice at least once or twice per week. There are also lots of orchestra camps available over the summertime (click here for more information) that can give a real boost to your child’s playing abilities.

Q: What if I don’t want to return my instrument and just do a “size-up”?

A: Size-ups are also easy. Just bring your son or daughter and their instrument into the Day Violins shop during open hours. We will do an exchange of instruments for the proper size. Just a word of caution – the last two weeks of August and the entire month of September is our busiest time, so to avoid a long wait time at the shop, try to not plan your size-up during this time period.
